I have had a couple of questions regarding HTML emails and why they appear distorted when the message is opened. FirstClass does this for one main reason. To stop Spammers from using a very effective technique called graphic beacons.
Get ready for some geek information!
Did you know that 80% of all email traffic on the internet is Spam?
Pictures are frequently embedded into spam messages. They can also embed pictures that are actually not in the message itself, but located on the spammer's computer somewhere in West Woebegone. (These are known as "graphic beacons.") When you view the message by opening it, information is sent back to the spammer indicating that they've got a "live one" and that they should add you to a larger list of addresses for future spam blasts.
Fortunately FirstClass does preserve the original HTML format of the email and adds it as an attachment. Open the attachment and you see the email they way it was intended to be seen.
DO NOT BLINDLY OPEN ATTACHMENTS!!!!!
Make sure you're comfortable with the subject and sender, more importantly make sure you were expecting the email. 90% of mass mailing viruses were received from a friend who unwittingly activated the virus on his/her computer. The Virus then grabbed that user's address book and sent a copy to all of his/her friends.
Feel free to contact the Tech Department if you're unsure. We take these matters very seriously!
